What we do

Training for Early Career Researchers

We are convening an online masterclass series for Early Career Researchers, hosted virtually by the Sheffield Urban Institute. The aims of the online masterclasses are to provide a platform for learning and exchange between early career scholars and senior academics working on topics related to urban climate finance, as well as to incorporate emerging scholars from institutions and geographies as yet underrepresented in existing urban climate finance scholarship. More information about the masterclasses is coming soon. If you are interested in hearing more about/participating in the masterclasses, please get in touch.

Masterclasses

The 2021-2022 masterclass series (now concluded) was part of the Urban Climate Finance Network work programme on ‘Decentering Urban Climate Finance.’ Supported by the Urban Studies Foundation, this network promotes discussion that provincialises the dominant and imagined geographies of climate finance, draws out generative connections and interdependencies across places, debates and theories, and expands and decenters notions of the ‘financial’.

The masterclass series provided self-defined early career researchers (ECRs) with opportunities for learning, exchanging and networking both amongst themselves and with established scholars in the field of critical (urban) finance, urban studies, urban geography, environmental justice and climate research. The series promoted and supported the work of ECRs as they think through the different forms of finance that are mobilised for climate and low-carbon action in cities (from formal financial instruments, e.g. green bonds, to informal or community-based forms of finance, e.g. mobilising community savings for climate adaptation).

Workshops

We convened two writing and networking workshops in Durham (UK) in October 2021 and Zurich (Switzerland) in May 2022. These workshops brought together a group of scholars to jointly work on a special issue on ‘decentering urban climate finance research,’ to develop further networking activities and to identify further funding opportunities.

Networking & Information Sharing

We have set up a mailing list to share information about upcoming events, networking activities, funding and job opportunities amongst network members. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at urbanclifi@gmail.com if you want to be added to the list and if you have got news you would like to share.

Our core team will be focused on delivering our programme of events funded by the Urban Studies Foundation until 2022 (workshops and ECRs masterclasses), but we are always keen to support and promote other activities led by network members. If you are interested in convening a reading group, or in organising a guest lecture, panel discussion, or other type of event, please get in touch with us.
